FAQ

Cleaning your fly line is very important especially when fishing saltwater. Simply pull line off your reel into a clean bucket or tub of freshwater. Put roughly 1oz or more of Cortland’s Line Cleaner solution onto a clean rag or towel. Firmly squeeze the towel with Pro Line Cleaner around the line and slowly pull line through the towel. You should be able to see dirt or discolored streaks on the towel when finished.

Clear Intermediate Fly Line for Clear-Water Precision

Cortland’s Clear Intermediate Fly Line is a must-have for anglers looking to target selective fish in clear water with precision and finesse. Whether you're working shallow saltwater flats or stillwater trout lakes, this line provides a stealthy presentation and superior control below the surface. With decades of fly line innovation behind it, Cortland developed this intermediate line to solve a common challenge: getting your fly to the strike zone without startling fish in gin-clear water. It’s especially valuable in calm or highly pressured environments where even the shadow of a fly line can put fish down.

The line features a crystal-clear, slow-sinking profile with a sink rate of 1.5 to 2 inches per second. This gives you the ability to swim baitfish patterns, streamers, and even large nymphs at just the right depth—without the sudden plunge of a faster sinking line. Perfect for fishing just under the film where predatory fish hunt, the Clear Intermediate gives your flies more time in the zone, more chances to trigger follows, and ultimately more opportunities to entice a strike.

Built on a Monofilament Core for Direct Connection

Under the hood, the Clear Intermediate Fly Line is built on a supple monofilament core that ensures smooth handling and a direct connection to your fly. This core resists coiling and memory in both warm and cold water conditions, offering consistent performance across a wide range of environments. The clear coating helps the line all but disappear underwater, which is critical for spooky fish like carp, bonefish, or even pressured stillwater trout.

The intermediate density is especially useful when fishing over submerged weeds, drop-offs, or structure. Unlike floating lines, which sit high on the surface and can drag or spook fish, the Clear Intermediate gets under the surface tension and lets your fly swim naturally with the current or during the retrieve. It's a favorite among anglers who like to explore with their presentation—slow strips, figure-eights, or active retrieves all benefit from the line’s control and tracking.

A Versatile Tool for Both Fresh and Saltwater Anglers

The Clear Intermediate isn’t limited to freshwater. Saltwater anglers love it for skinny flats, estuaries, and backcountry mangroves where calm water and tight quarters demand quiet presentations. It loads quickly and shoots with minimal disturbance, giving you a stealth advantage in shallow gamefish situations. Whether you're targeting redfish cruising the grasslines in the Gulf or stalking trout in a calm Montana lake, this line handles subtle takes and delicate retrieves with equal poise.

Pair it with an 8- to 10-foot clear leader for the best results, especially when you need to maintain your camo advantage from line to fly. The line’s balanced taper allows for accurate roll casts and quick single-hand deliveries, especially at close to moderate distances where precise placement makes the difference between a look and a take.

If you're an angler who values subtlety, control, and a deeper connection to your fly, Cortland’s Clear Intermediate Fly Line is the stealthy, dependable companion your subsurface game deserves.
