Frequently Asked Questions

Fly Fishing Questions

I did not label my line once I took it off my reel for storage, how can I tell what line size I have?
This is a question we receive a lot. Many anglers store lines and forget to label them. The easiest way to determine what line you have is to cast it on the various rod sizes that you own. Sometimes you may think you have a 5wt line, but it feels better when cast on a 4wt. Whatever the line feels best paired with, stick with that rod/line combination. Regardless of what size line you may have, matching the rod and line is key.
How do I clean my fly line?
Cleaning your fly line is very important especially when fishing saltwater. Simply pull line off your reel into a clean bucket or tub of freshwater. Put roughly 1oz or more of Cortland’s Pro Line Cleaner solution onto a clean rag or towel. Firmly squeeze the towel with Pro Line Cleaner around the line and slowly pull line through the towel. You should be able to see dirt or discolored streaks on the towel when finished.
What are the sink rates for the intermediate, type 3, 6 and 9 sink tips?
Hover: Neutral
Slow Intermediate: 1 IPS (Inches Per Second)
Medium Intermediate: 1.5 - 2 IPS (Inches Per Second)
Fast Intermediate: 2 - 3 IPS (Inches Per Second)
Type 3 Sink Rate: 3 - 4 IPS (Inches Per Second)
Type 4 Sink Rate: 4 - 5 IPS (Inches Per Second)
Type 5 Sink Rate: 5 - 6 IPS (Inches Per Second)
Type 6 Sink Rate: 6 - 7 IPS (Inches Per Second)
Type 7 Sink Rate: 7 - 8 IPS (Inches Per Second)
Type 9 Sink Rate: 9+ IPS (Inches Per Second)
Why are your competition nymph lines sold in tip diameters? How do I know which one should work best for my rod?
Each of our Competition lines are sold in specific tip diameters. Personal preference would dictate which size you purchase. If you are unsure of which size to try we recommend the .022’’ Diameter. This size will give you the best feel of your rig when tight line or Czech nymphing but still allow for proper turnover with small dries.
